Salmon and sea trout

The Namsen, known as "the Queen of the Rivers" is not just a lifeline running through the Namdalen, but also one of the main rivers the great North Atlantic salmon uses for breeding. It's these giant salmon which have put the river amongst the best in the world, and which now attracts thousands of people from home and abroad seeking the ultimate fishing experience.


When the river was discovered by English anglers in the 1800s, it was already locally famous for its huge salmon, but was best known commercially for transporting timber, and later for hydro electricity. But in the last decade, these industries have paled in comparison to salmon fishing. And with good reason, because the salmon have got bigger - much bigger! Even though we have to go right back to 1924 to find the biggest salmon ever taken on a rod in the Namsen (31.5 kg), large salmon have been caught consistently on the Namsen in recent years. Even though the 25 kg barrier was almost breached in 2004 with a whopper of 24.3 kg, we have to go right back to 1981 to find a salmon over 25 Kg taken on the Namsen. But having said that, it's a rare year when several salmon over 20 Kg are not taken. This is probably what makes the Namsen so special. Finally, we'd like to inform you that the biggest salmon found in the Namsen was said to weigh over 40 Kg. GOOD FISHING!

The Bjøra As from 15.05.09, Namsen Adventure has had access to the Skjørland/Røttesmo pool on the Bjøra. Even though the distance from Eidsvatnet to the mouth of the Bjøra when it runs into the Namsen is no more than 6-7 km in a straight line, the Bjøra actually stretches almost 20 km, which indicates a very twisty river. The Bjøra is one of the three main tributaries to the Namsen, but even though it is a tributary, and cannot be compared in terms of water volume, it can actually match the Namsen when it comes to the size of the salmon. The Bjøra also has the honour along with the Namsen of having a salmon weighing  over 30 Kg caught there. Even though we have to go back to the 1950s to find one of this size, we don't have to go back more than a couple of years to the last whopper of over 23 Kg taken from the Bjøra. Fishing is best early in the season, but can also be good later if there is a lot of water, when a boat can be used. The Bjøra is also highly popular for the keen fly fisherman throughout the entire season.
