Fishing Adventures at the End of the World—An Unforgettable Trip to Sørøya

In 2025, we partnered with Waidwerk TV to host a raffle where participants could win a trip to Sørøya Rorbu & Havfiske. So the question is: How did things go for the lucky winners? Well, we’re very fortunate to have received a detailed report about the trip and their experiences. And even better: We’re allowed to share it with everyone! From the start in Düsseldorf through the actual itinerary to numerous experiences with fishing and nature. In this article, you’ll get a really good sense of what a trip to Norway can be like—and perhaps also why so many people come back year after year.

Last month, Karsten, Dennis, Christian, and I set out on a very special trip: I had won a fishing trip to Sørøya in an Instagram contest hosted by Waidwerk and DinTur. The prize included lodging, a boat, and a guided tour with camp host Marcus Dietze. Our destination was the “Sørøya Rorbu & Havfiske” fishing camp in Akkarfjord on the Norwegian island of Sørøya.
We booked the flights, ferry crossings, and a hotel stay in Alta through DinTur. We flew from Düsseldorf via Oslo to Alta, where we spent the first night in a hotel before continuing on to Sørøya the next morning.
The trip went off without a hitch. Our luggage was checked all the way to our final destination, so we were able to transfer in Oslo without any stress. The hotel in Alta also impressed us in every way: it was clean, nicely furnished, and the breakfast had everything we needed.
We arranged the transfers from the airport to the hotel and, the next morning, to the ferry directly on site. We then took the high-speed ferry from Alta to Hammerfest and from there on to Akkarfjord on Sørøya.
When we arrived at the ferry terminal, a vehicle with a trailer from the camp was already waiting for us to take our luggage to our accommodations. This allowed us to kick off our fishing adventure right after we arrived, without any hassle.
For many, a trip to Sørøya might seem a bit daunting—both because flights are somewhat less frequent so far north and because you’re heavily reliant on public transportation there, such as speedboats and buses. This just goes to show that, even though it may seem like a big and complicated undertaking, it’s actually not that bad at all. This group took their trip in late September, and many of them had been worried about the weather, which is often unpredictable this far north. But as you can read here for yourself, almost everything went like clockwork! So, don’t let that scare you off—it’s not nearly as complicated as it might seem, and the destination is undoubtedly worth it.
After we moved into our house, host Marcus Dietze took the time to give us a brief orientation on the boat and the fishing grounds. That way, we were well prepared and were able to head out onto the water first thing the next morning.
The scenery alone was impressive: rugged rocky landscapes, vast fjords, and natural beauty you won’t soon forget. We were able to head out every day—sometimes in bright sunshine, sometimes in rain, wind, and rough waves.
What really sets this fishing ground apart is its versatility. Depending on the weather, we could head farther out or head for more sheltered areas. Even when conditions didn’t allow for longer trips, there were plenty of coves where we could fish and drift purposefully. This constantly offered us new opportunities to explore the fishing ground.

Sørøya isn’t just scenically beautiful—it’s also a fishing ground exceptionally rich in fish. We were able to catch cod, coalfish, halibut, redfish, and mackerel in good sizes. For us as predator anglers, that was, of course, a real highlight.
But there was plenty to experience not only underwater. Above the water’s surface, too, things never got boring. Whale sightings and circling sea eagles were among our most memorable experiences and were almost a daily occurrence.

It was precisely this combination of varied fishing and the unique natural surroundings that made our days on the water so special. Every outing brought new experiences and ensured that we could enjoy our time on Sørøya to the fullest.
We were also completely satisfied with our accommodations. They had everything you need for a successful fishing vacation.
There’s a small grocery store near the camp where you can get the essentials. There’s also a small store with an attached restaurant at the ferry dock.
After long days of fishing, we often met up with the other guests in the fish-gutting room. There, we struck up conversations, shared experiences, and talked about the day’s adventures. Afterward, we could hang up our waders in the adjacent drying room and, if needed, stock up on gear at the on-site fishing shop.
It was precisely this laid-back atmosphere that made our stay especially enjoyable. It quickly became clear that everything here is geared toward the needs of anglers.

For the return trip, we opted for a slightly different route, as it worked better for our schedule. From Sørøya, we took the high-speed ferry to Hammerfest. From there, we took a bus to the airport in Alta before flying back to Düsseldorf via Oslo.
Even though the trip had come to an end, we had plenty of memories to take home—of great days of fishing, breathtaking landscapes, and an unforgettable time among friends.
All that’s left for me to say is: For me, it was a truly wonderful trip. Being able to enjoy the coolest hobby in the world in a setting like this is something very special.
Great accommodations, a friendly team, a diverse and fish-rich fishing area, and breathtaking nature—what more could you ask for?
I’m incredibly grateful that I got to experience this trip through the Waidwerk and DinTur giveaway. Sørøya blew us away and will definitely stay with me for a long time.
For me, one thing is certain: This trip was a real highlight—and a fishing adventure I’d repeat in a heartbeat.

Many thanks to the group for writing such a wonderful recap of the trip. From the flight and speedboat ride to the fishing around Sørøya—it’s almost as if we were there ourselves.
We’re glad you enjoyed your trip, and we look forward to hearing more from you!
